Zero-touch device provisioning sounds futuristic. With Windows Autopilot and Intune in Microsoft 365 Business Premium, it's a standard part of every Optimyze deployment. Here's how it works.
Key takeaways
- 1Joins Microsoft Entra ID (Azure AD)
- 2Enrolls in Intune and receives all compliance and configuration policies
- 3Downloads and installs all required Microsoft 365 apps
- 4Applies all security settings (BitLocker, firewall, ASR rules)
- 5Names itself according to your naming convention
The traditional device provisioning process is painful: IT receives a new laptop, images it, installs applications, configures settings, and ships or hands it to the user. In a distributed team or multi-site business, this can take days and requires hands-on IT time for every device.
What Windows Autopilot changes
With Windows Autopilot and Microsoft Intune, the provisioning process flips entirely. Hardware vendors can register devices in your Autopilot tenant. When the laptop arrives with the user, they connect to Wi-Fi, enter their Microsoft 365 credentials, and the device automatically:
- Joins Microsoft Entra ID (Azure AD)
- Enrolls in Intune and receives all compliance and configuration policies
- Downloads and installs all required Microsoft 365 apps
- Applies all security settings (BitLocker, firewall, ASR rules)
- Names itself according to your naming convention
No IT person touches the device. The user is productive within 30–60 minutes of opening the box.
What Optimyze configures
Setting up Autopilot correctly requires planning. Optimyze configures the Autopilot deployment profile for each client, setting up the out-of-box experience (OOBE) customisation, enrollment status page, and Intune policies that deploy in the right order during provisioning. We test with a real device before rolling out, and maintain the configuration as your app stack evolves.
The onboarding story it enables
When a new team member joins your business, your process is: order a laptop from your preferred vendor, add the serial number to Autopilot, create the user's Microsoft 365 account, and ship the device to their home. Everything else is automatic. This is standard practice for Optimyze managed IT clients.
